Sierra Leone Police joins COVID-19 vaccination campaign

In a bid to complement the vaccination efforts of the National Coronavirus Response Centre (NACOVERC), the Police in Kenema with support from NGO Welth Hunger Hlife (WHH) have taken Covid-19 vaccination sensitization to the people of Boama, Koya chiefdom in Kenema district.

Police Inspector, Ensah Nguanya of the Traffic division said they decided to collaborate with Welt Hunger Hlife at chiefdom level to dispel the persistent misinformation on social media about the vaccine that has created a lot of fear in the minds of people.

 “We are here to assure our people that the vaccine is safe and good for the health,’’ he said.

Inspector Nguanya admonished the people of Boama Koya to adhere to all the covid-19 regulations especially hand washing and the use of facemasks in public places such as mosques and churches.

The divisional traffic officer, Assistant Superintendent Amara Moijueh said that government was yet to lift the ban on secret society and therefore warned the people of Koya to be law abiding as they have got intelligence that some communities are doing clandestine initiation that he said is against the law.

ASP Moijueh said the death rate for this year is alarming and that medics have proven that a number of them are covid-19 related. He cautioned bike riders against over loading of passengers especially considering Koya is along the border with Liberia.

He said government might ease restrictions should the people get vaccinated.  He pleaded with the people and the Koya chiefdom authorities to serve as influencers to ensure that people age 18 and over get vaccinated.

On behalf of the chiefdom authorities of Koya chiefdom, the Boama section chief, Bockarie Gonda expressed appreciation to the Sierra Leone Police for the steps taken in sensitizing their people.  

He said with such engagement the people of Koya chiefdom particularly Boama would now be confident to take the vaccine.

Speaking on behalf of the women, Gitta Keifala praised the Police officers for working with WHH in sensitizing especially women as a lot of information was going round that the vaccines affect women’s reproductive health.  She assured her audience of having been vaccinated and doing fine.
