Following his appointment as the new Chief Medical Examiner by President Julius Maada Bio, Dr. Simeon Owizz Koroma is set to face the house of Parliament any time soon for approval of his appointment.
“You are kindly advised to contact the clerk of parliament who will arrange a meeting with committee on appointments and the public service of parliament to consider your appointment,” his appointment letter reads in part.
The appointment came five months after he was suspended as Chief Forensic Pathologist at the mortuary department of the government’s main Connaught hospital in Freetown.
His new role include reporting the causes of death, establishing the procedures for investigation into particular deaths and to help prevent deaths from similar causes happening in the future by commenting on matters connected with death , including matters related to public health or safety and the administration of justice, among others.
In addition, the Chief Medical examiner could appoint his deputy in consultation with the Minister of Internal Affairs, and should be a qualified physician, experienced in the field of forensic pathology, and licensed to practice in Sierra Leone.
It could be recalled that his suspension letter dated 11th March 2021, noted the chaotic nature of the services at the mortuary at the time but will now serve as supervisor to his former job.
Dr. Owizz Kamara acquired his education at Sierra Leone’s Fourah Bay College, the Odessa State Medical Institute, Royal College of Pathologists, London Hospital Medical College, Royal Tropical Institute Amsterdam, International and European body Chartered Institute of Environmental Health and other institutions.
