Sierra Leone’s capital tops country’s incidents of sexual assaults

Executive Director of Rainbo Initiative Daniel Kettor has said that 40.6% of the total reported sexual assault cases they received in 2022 are from Western Area Urban and Rural making it the highest of the six regions covered.

Kettor at the launch of the Rainbo Initiative’s SGBV Survivors’ 2022 data on the 5th of April 2023 said that the Western Area Urban and Rural recorded the highest number of sexual assaults reported from six districts in the country with one thousand and ninety-eight (1,098) cases.

Sierra Leoneans become more tribal – IGR report

A Survey conducted by Afrobarometer, through their partners in Sierra Leone, the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) indicated that the proportion of citizens who prioritized their Sierra Leonean identity over their ethnic identity has dropped by 20 percentage points over the past decade.

The Report of the survey was made public on the 5 March 2023 in the presence of representatives of political parties, civil society, security forces, and the media at the Country Lodge in Freetown.

Sierra Leone parliament chickens out on welfare bill amid condemnation

Parliamentarians after hours of tension, heightened emotions, and loud undertones denoting disappointment in the well of parliament, withdrew the bill entitled the Parliament Act of 2023.

The bill according to its drafters seeks to address the welfare of the legislative arm of government.

Following a division among the law makers on the bill, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Segepoh Solomon Thomas moved a motion for a withdrawal on the 6th of April 2023.

City of Rest calls for help after fire guts mental home

$25million for Tikonkoh-Kpetemba road

Sierra Leone’s parliament has ratified a twenty-five dollar loan agreement for the Tikonkoh Kpetemba- Mattru Jong road project between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA).

According to the Minister of Finance Sheku Fantamadi Bagura, the agreement which was ratified on the 4th of April 2023 seeks to contribute to the economic development of the local communities in the southern region and the country as a whole.

In an effort to intensify the war against fake news, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists – SLAJ in partnership with the Independent Radio Network (IRN) and the BBC Media Action, with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Partners on 5th April launched a platform for the publication of verified contents.
