IMF approves US $21.13 million for Sierra Leone

The International Monetary Fund (IMF) has approved US $21.13 million for disbursement to Sierra Leone as part of the Extended Credit Facility program. The fund, which was approved on the 3rd of April, comes at a time when the country is looking for resources to respond to the outbreak of the Coronavirus.

The decision by the Executive Board of the Fund comes after the completion of the second review of Sierra Leone’s performance under the US$172.1 million ECF that country signed up for in November 2018.

Man in court for “murder” of father-in -law

A man accused of murdering his father-in-law over jealousy has made another appearance before Justice Monfred Sesay of High Court No 2 after been held in jail for over 18 months.

Foday Jusu Yambasu is accused of murdering Sorie Kamara, the father of his wife, with a cutlass. The incident, according to court testimonies, followed a bitter row between husband and wife, Fatmata Koroma.

The incident occurred on 11th of September 2018. 

Covid-19: President Bio imposes curfew in Kambia

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio last week imposed a 12-hour daily curfew on Kambia District as part of measures geared towards tackling the rising spread of the coronavirus disease (Covid-19).

A statement issued by the office of the Inspector General of Police says residents of Kambia are prohibited from moving outdoors between 8pm and 7am.

Free Health Care supplies flown in amidst shutdown

The Ministry of Health on Saturday received a major boost with the arrival of medicines and crucial medical supplies on board a Brussels Airlines repatriation flight.

The cargo valued US$130, 000 and weighing nearly 18 tons, contains critical medical commodities procured by UNICEF on behalf of the government for its Free Health Care Initiative (FHCI) which targets the most vulnerable members of the population – pregnant women, babies under five years and lactating mothers.

Community health workers commit to fighting Covid-19 in Sierra Leone

In spite of an avalanche of concerns, community health workers say they are willing to work with the government in the fight to contain the Coronavirus pandemic in the country.

An umbrella body of the healthcare providers is however calling on the government to consider putting in place a few things to help them play their part in the national effort.

Stay at home! - Sierra Leone's C-19 boss warns

Ahead of the planned three-day lockdown, the head of the National Covid-19 Response Team, (Rtd) Brig. Kellie Hassan Conteh, has urged Sierra Leoneans to stay home.

His appeal comes in the wake of the confirmation of the second case of the coronavirus disease in the country.

Brig. Conteh, who is also the Minister of Defense, said movement within the country should be limited during the three days lockdown.
