UAE Gov’t to construct 100-bed hospital in Sierra Leone

Authorities in the United Arab Emirates, UAE, have confirmed the construction of 100 beds field hospital in Sierra Leone to support the country's COVID-19 response. 

According to report sent by the Press attaché to Abu Dhabi, Mohamed Lamin Massaquoi an official communication sent to the Sierra Leone Embassy in Abu Dhabi, by the UAE authorities confirmed the UAE authorities commitment to the process.

Ombudsman present annual report to President Bio

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has on Friday 4th February received the 2019-2020 Annual Report from the office of the Ombudsman, Leon Jenkins-Johnston Esq.

 Receiving the report, President Bio assures the Ombudsman’s office of Government Support in ensuring the independence and operations of the institution. 

Parliament Approves Lands Minister and Four Others

Lawmakers have unanimously approved the newly appointed Minister of Lands and Country Planning Dr. Turad Senesie and four other appointments recently announced by President Julius Maada Bio. The report of the Parliamentary committee on appointments and public service chaired by the leader of government business, Mathew Sahr Nyuma also gave a nod to Dr. Jonathan Titus Williams to serve as Deputy Minister of Planning and Economic Development.

Sierra Leone Covid19 response steps up community engagement

The latest spike in the number of recorded COVID -19 cases in the Western Area of the country has prompted NACOVERC workers to embark on community outreach within Freetown and its environs.

During the awareness and sensitization sessions, the team also distributed free face masks to people in public places and communities such as PZ, Cong Cross, Cotton Tree, Wellington, Jui and Lumley.   The team comprised Risk Communications and Social Mobilisation experts and they went to densely populated settlements in Dwazark, Rokupa, Portee, Up-gun, Ferry Junction and Calaba town.

ACC Indicts Two Civil Aviation Staff

The Anti-Corruption Commission has indicted Julian Clarke and Sallieu Kargbo of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority on various corruption offences.

A press statement published by the Commission revealed that the two were indicted on a total of Nine counts of corruption offences bordering on Abuse of Office, contrary to Section 42 (1), Deceiving a Principal, contrary to Section 40 (1), and Conspiracy to Commit a Corruption Offence, contrary to Section 128 (1), of the Anti-Corruption Act, No. 12 of 2008 as Amended by the Anti-Corruption Act No. 9 of 2019.

University lecturers end strike in Sierra Leone

The long drawn-out strike action by the academic staff of all three public universities in Sierra Leone has been called off after President Julius Maada Bio, his Vice President Dr Juldeh Jalloh and other senior government officials held a closed-door meeting with representatives of the striking lecturers at State House yesterday, 2nd February 2021.

Classes are expected to resume today.
