As a way of supporting communities in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and in promoting personal hygiene in Sierra Leone, Plan International Sierra Leone through its Hygiene and Behavioral Change Coalition (HBCC) Project has embarked on the distribution of hand-washing materials in four districts.
The items which include 170 (200 liter water container) hand washing stations targeting 170 communities, 4,500 Veronica buckets targeting the same number of households (reaching 27,000 people) are being distributed along with sensitization messages by the organization across its operational districts.
Addressing community members during the distribution, the Project Manager, Yambasu Koker appealed to the community stakeholders to monitor the use of the items and to ensure that they encourage their community members to follow the COVID-19 protocols.
He said during this COVID-19 pandemic the project will also support 4,950 girls with re-usable sanitary pads and their drying lines.
Receiving the items in Freetown being the current hotspot for the COVID-19 in the country, Sanie Mansaray, one of the community leaders at Gbendenbu appreciated Plan International for the gesture.
He said that: “these items have arrived so timely to support the community stop the COVID-19 and I will commit to keep sensitizing my community to maintain social distancing, do frequent washing of hands, correct the method of wearing facemasks and disinfecting surfaces.”
Zachariah Bangura, Deputy Mayor of Portloko district, urged the people of the district to take good care of the hand-washing items so as to better serve their purpose.
He assured that: “The council is committed to monitoring how people are using the various materials,” and called on residents of Portloko to continue giving support to Plan International.
The project, with support from Unilever and DFID is implemented in Moyamba, Port Loko, Western Area Rural and Urban and Koinadugu.
