Protest at Sierra Leone ruling party headquarters

Dozens of members and supporters of the ruling Sierra Leone People’s Party yesterday thronged their party headquarters in Freetown to register their disapproval over the state of internal democracy within the oldest political party in the country. 

Carrying placards denouncing any further extension of the mandate of the party’s national executive council, the protesters said they wanted new elections to be conducted to choose their leaders since the current holders of the positions had already been extended three times. 

Sahn Malen lights up 

The Deputy Minister of Energy, Dr. Eldred Tunde Taylor has on Sunday 27th June 2021 commissioned 100kw solar grid in Sahn town, Malen chiefdom, Pujehun district. 

Speaking at the ceremony, Dr. Taylor said Jendema, Fairo, and Blama Massaquoi communities in the Pujehun district will benefit from the mini solar grid and that Pujehun township’s electrification project is ongoing.  He assured that the mini solar grid is a reliable source of electricity. 

Sierra Leone inflation rate increases in May again

Data on the monthly Consumer Price Index (CPI) for the month of May 2021 released by Statistics Sierra Leone has revealed an increase in the inflation rate from 9.60 percent point in April to 9.80 percentage points in May, up by 0.20 percentage points.  

However, the country still maintains its single-digit inflation rate recorded in the month of March 2021, a figure that was reported by officials, as the lowest in six years.

Liberia bans mass funerals

Health authorities in Liberia have banned mass attendances at funerals across the country and have restricted them to only funeral homes. This latest order is an addition to other restrictive measures put in place by officials in the neighbouring country to curb the third wave of the coronavirus pandemic, which has seen an upsurge in COVI-19 cases in many parts of the world including Sub-Saharan Africa.

Local councils receive dump trucks

Local Councils across the country have on Tuesday 29 June 2021 received dump trucks donated by the Russian government to the government of Sierra Leone. The 40 tracks were presented to the councils at a special handing over ceremony that was held at the Sierra Leone Road Transport Corporation (SLRTC) compound, Kissy in Freetown.

Chief Minister Commissions bridge in Kenema

The road work was facilitated by the Kenema district council.
