Sierra Leone parliament frowns at Sierra Rutile deal

Parliamentarians, who recently embarked on oversight visits to different mining companies across the country, have expressed their dissatisfaction over attempts by Marampa mining company to buy over Sierra Rutile Mines.

The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Mines and Mineral Resources, Saa Emerson Lamina explained to the House on Tuesday 26 March 2024, that they were aware of the Chief Executive Officer of the Marampa Mines wanting to take over Sierra Rutile.

Guinea to extradite alleged Sierra Leonean coup plotter

A Government press release dated 25 March 2024 has stated that Abubakarr Boxx  Konteh is to be extradited to Sierra Leone for his alleged role in last year’s failed coup.

According to the release, a joint operation between the Guinean authorities and the Sierra Leone security apparatus apprehended Konteh at the Guinea airport in an attempt to flee to Senegal, after being in hiding since the failed coup.

Court Martial: CCTV footage shows assailants in action

The 26th prosecution witness, Detective Inspector Mohamed Jusu at the ongoing court martial trying 27 military personnel in connection to the November 26, 2023 failed coup, has continued displaying Close Circuit Television (CCTV) footage in court.

The footage showed some of the assailants, including the fourth and ninth accused persons Abu Dauda and Idrissa Kallon at the main entrance of the Pademba Road Correctional Centre in Freetown.

$50 million flour mill underway in Sierra Leone

The General Manager of Sonoco-Bread Avenue Academy, Mark Pritchard has disclosed that they are currently constructing a Flour Mill at Cline Town; an investment which he said is worth Fifty Million Dollars.

Pritchard disclosed to Journalists who were taken on a conducted of the the Bread Avenue Academy on 27th March this year, in which he noted that the flour mill will be completed at the end of this year. ”When the project is completed we will be able to provide up to 800 to 1,000 for Sierra Leoneans,” he added.

Top Sierra Leone football coach dies in a road accident en route to honouring a fixture

Sierra Leone’s football family was plunged into deep shock and grief following a fatal road accident involving a bus carrying players of Premier League side Ports Authority which claimed the lives of Coach Lamin Bangura, the bus driver and his mate. Several other players including the goalkeeper were said to have been seriously injured and are in a critical condition in hospital. Other players including Musa ‘Tombo’ Noah Kamara who was reportedly at the back of the bus were unhurt.

25 water kiosks to be constructed in Freetown

Mayor of Freetown, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr has formally commissioned the construction of 25 Water Kiosks in Freetown under a project implemented in partnership with the United Nations Capital Development Fund (UNCDF) and the International Labour Organization (ILO).

The project funded by the United Nations Secretary-General’s Peace Building Fund (UN PBF) is being implemented in Aberdeen Crab Town, Dwarzack, Lumley, Mayenkineh, and Rokupa.

Sierra Leone power distributor dismisses staff over electricity theft

The Director-General of the Electricity Distribution and Supply Authority (EDSA), Joe-Lahai Sormana says personnel caught stealing electricity have been summarily dismissed.

Sormana disclosed during the Government weekly press briefing held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Freetown, on Tuesday 26th March, as he spoke about the challenges the power distributor faces.
