World hails Sierra Leone for repealing the death penalty

The repeal of the death penalty by the government of Sierra Leone has attracted reactions from many quarters within and out of the country with development partners hailing the action. UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab in a tweet said it was fantastic to see Parliament vote on abolishing the death penalty. He congratulated President Bio and the people of Sierra Leone for what he said was an important milestone and registered the UK’s continued support to the country.

The Makeni Riot: accused granted bail after one year

Justice Musu Damba Kamara has granted bail to Amadu 'Kondoe' Koroma and 12 others who were allegedly involved in the 18th July 2020 Generator riot in Makeni after spending a year in detention.

The Prosecuting Counsel had led in 6 witnesses in the persons of ASP George Momoh, ASP Anthony Moriba Gaya, DPC 13585 Paul Lewis, DPC 9268 Collins J, DPC Komrabai Cole and D.SGT 1516 Conteh at the Lower Court.

Sierra Leone ranks 4th in drowning deaths

The Chairman of the Sierra Leone Life Saving Society, Patrick Olumide Campbell has told Politico that Sierra Leone has been rated as a country with the 4th highest death by drowning record in Africa.

Campbell said that drowning is prevalent in Sierra Leone and that it is preventable if the required measures are adhered to. He said that education on the prevention of drowning is important especially when the nation is recording heavy downpour during the rainy season.

Sierra Leone to reserve 30% seats for women – Gender empowerment bill

In an effort to bridge the gender divide in governance, the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs has developed a bill proposing 30% elective positions for women through reserved seat mechanisms.

The Bill, according to the Minister of Gender and Children Affairs Manty Tarawalli has already got cabinet and Presidential approval and that she has been authorized to lay the document before parliament for enactment into law.  She added that despite efforts made gender equality remains a challenge.
