As a way to revamp the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), the establishment’s Peace Keeping and Law Enforcement Academy has conducted a three-day training of trainers’ course.
The training was designed, tailored and customized to match with the SLP’s needs and international expectations. The training dealt with relevant sectors such as service delivery, ethics, corruption, and discipline and hostility reduction.
The Commandant of the Sierra Leone Peace Keeping and Law Enforcement Academy, Superintendent Alieu Jalloh said the training is to capacitate the Police training team in order to sharpen their skills which they can pass on to other officers.
Supt. Jalloh said the event was fulfilling the Inspector General’s dream, explaining that the IG had two agendas namely welfare and training, with a lot having been achieved in welfare, with the the focus on training.
He said different training units across the country are part of the training. The Deputy Inspector General of Police Elizabeth Turay said most of the beneficiaries are trainers from the police training schools and a few others were vetted by the committee from different specialized areas like Family Support Unit, OSD to be part of the training.
The Deputy IG said capacitating an institution was very key, noting that they are not just enhancing knowledge but also making sure that the policemen and women are capacitated to be professional when it comes to service delivery. “Any organization can only grow to its highest peak when we capacitate our men and women”, said the officer.
She told the beneficiaries that the training was not just about capacitating them individually, but making them take the lead for all other future trainings.
She advised them to make use of the opportunity and expressed her delight for the exercise and to see the academy up and running.
Director of Training Assistant Inspector General, Gbonnoh said like any other nation, national security is very important and a necessary ingredient for development.
The Inspector General (IGP) of Police, Ambrose Michael Sovula explained that when he took up the mantle as IGP, he teamed up with professionals to help him design a roadmap for his tenure including a research which discovered that there was knowledge gap and personnel welfare deficit.
On the theme “welfare driven and training reintroduction to the Sierra Leone Police”; he said the event was not a mistake, but an actualization of his dream to transform the institution.
He said investing in training is supporting the vision of President Julius Maada Bio in human capital development. He said education is vital and encouraged the trainees to learn until they reach higher heights, saying they should not be complacent when they are capacitated.
The training also addressed aspects of communication, search processes, merit and demerit of E-learning amongst.
One of the partcipants, Assistant Superintendent, Saio Conteh said the training was timely and educative.
