IGR urges Stats SL to regain citizens’ confidence

In a reaction to the censuses of 2015 and 2021, the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) has urged Statistics Sierra Leone to take urgent steps to regain citizens’ confidence in the results.

The report from IGR states that over the last seven years, Sierra Leone spent a little over twenty million dollars ($ 20,000,000) on the population censuses of the APC-led administration in 2015 and the ruling SLPP in 2021.

Call for a sustainable public health agency

The Chairman of the National COVID-19 Response Centre, has noted the need for a sustainable institution that will be responsible to manage all public health emergencies that may emerge in the country.

Dr Amara Jambai made the call at a press conference held at the response centre yesterday to update the media and Civil society groups about the current trend of the coronavirus in the country.

Sierra Leone signs six agreements with Kenya

Sierra Leone and Kenya have signed six Cooperation agreements on fostering cultural and economic development.

The agreements include Joint Commission of Corporation, Political and Economic Diplomacy, Gender Equality and Women Empowerment, Trade and Investment, Tourism and Art, and ICT and Youth Education. The various agreements were signed by Sierra Leone’s Foreign Minister and the Kenyan Government.

More nabbed as others released over exams malpractice

 Assistant Public Relations Officer at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) Sylvanus Blake said the eleven candidates that were caught in the act of malpractice on the 2 nd June2022, have been released on bail.

Blake told Politico that the candidates along with the proprietor of the school were released after meeting their bail requirements. However, he noted that the investigation is ongoing, and that if evidence is found, they will be charged to court.

20-year-old "rape" to death

Police are investigating the death of a 20-year-old youth Grace Lamboi whose body was found at Experimental School, Njala Mokonde, in the Moyamba district.

Speaking to Politico, Head of Police media and Public Relations Officer for the Southern Region, ASP Mohamed Bobson Senu said the remains of the lady were discovered around the school by a teacher at the school.

ASP Senu said the matter was reported at the Njala Mokonde police post and later transferred to the Taiama police .

APC denies Le 500 million candidacy fee

The interim Secretary General of the leadership Committee of the opposition All People’s Congress (APC) party says his committee has nothing to do with a recent post on social media that stated an upfront non-refundable payment of 500 million Leones for members aspiring for the party’s presidential ticket.

Bumneh Bangura told Politico that “at no time did a directive of that nature come from the 21-member committee”, noting that “social media these days is inundated with all sorts of posts”.

Sierra Leone to review labour laws

Minister of Labour and Social Security, Alpha Osman Timbo has at the plenary session of the 110th International Labour Conference (ILC) in Geneva, Switzerland, presented a strong case for what he said is the Government’s willingness to promote and implement decent work and standards for women and men in Sierra Leone through ratification of 8 International Labour Organizations (ILO) conventions, and one protocol in 2021.
