Sierra Leone students cry for help in Pakistan

The leader for the Sierra Leonean students studying in Pakistan has expressed concerns over the nonpayment of their annual stipend due from the government for the 2021/2022 academic year.

Speaking to Politico, Abu Macavoray said they are currently “going through untold suffering”.

“Life has become unbearable as our stipend from HEC is Twenty thousand Pakistani Rupees ($100 US) for Ph.D. and MPhil/Master's students, and ten thousand Rupees ($50 US) for undergraduate students,” he said.

Ferry waiting room in darkness

Passengers plying the sea between Lungi and Freetown using the ferry service have expressed concerns over the lack of electricity and proper ventilation leading to total darkness in the waiting halls of the terminals at Kissy and Tagrin.

Row in Sierra Leone parliament over women’s seat

Undertones, verbal reactions and facial expressions indicating disapproval filled the atmosphere in the well of Parliament yesterday as discussions around reserved seats for women were brought on the floor for debate.

 This got the Member of Parliament representing constituency 029 in Kono, Rebecca Yei Kamara frustrated over the way her male colleagues in Parliament have handled the issue of the safe seats for women. She stated that they will no longer beg the men for what is rightfully theirs.

SMEDA prepares staff for business development tasks

Sierra Leone to focus on mechanized farming

President Julius Maada Bio has on the 19th June 2022 held bilateral discussions with the Emir of the State of Qatar, Sheikh Tamin bin Hamad Al Thani during which he expressed Sierra Leone’s focus on mechanized farming.   

President Bio said focus will be on agriculture through mechanized farming and private sector partnership, saying that with proper and accurate investment in agriculture, the country would become an exporting nation.

Sierra Leone rights commission demands to visit “Benghazi”

The Human Rights Commission of Sierra Leone (HRCSL) has demanded from the police that they be given unhindered access to the holding facility known as ‘Benghazi’ at the OSD headquarters at Kingharman Road in Freetown.

This came in the wake of the detention there and the alleged maltreatment of rapper Alhaji Amadu Bah and others, in relation to an alleged robbery incident at Leonco Gas station at Congo Cross some on 12 June.

Security sector warns against hate messages

The Security Sector through the Office of the National Security Adviser has issued a press release expressing alarm at what it said is the “growing spate of tribal and hate messages in the social media directed against certain ethnic groups of  Sierra Leone”.

Social media has in recent times been inundated with ethnic diatribes and disturbing inciting messages by people in and outside of the country.
