Save The Children fights hygiene problem in Sierra Leone

By Mustapha Kamara

Water and Sanitation Officer at Save the Children, a British organisation in Sierra Leone, has said they will continue to construct toilet and water facilities in slum areas in Freetown, which he says lack the facilities. Sahr Juana made the statement at an event in which his organisation was handing over a 2-room toilet facility to authorities in Ward 387 in the Hill Station community in west of Freetown. Juana said they had conducted investigations and found out that many slums in Freetown, including Hill Station, lacked access to “pure water and proper toilet facilities,” which had moved them to initially provide two bore holes, and the toilet facility at Hill Station costing them Le 140 million. He said they had provided the facilities in consonance with community authorities noting that they had catered more for school-going children.   “We think they need the facility … because most of them were defecating openly in small rivers within the community,” said Juana.

Expressing appreciation, host councilor, Samuel Kargbo, said that was not the first help rendered by Save The Children to his community, but however said his community was still grappling with hygiene problem as “my people are suffering to access basic pipe borne water and other facilities. The councilor pleaded with government and other nongovernmental organizations to come to their aid with more development projects that would address the needs of communities within his ward.
