The Icelandic charity organisation, Aurora Foundation on Monday 17 November donated 2,000 kilos of medicine and medical supplies for the treatment of Ebola patients through the First Lady, Sia Nyama Koroma.
Donating the items, the Chairman of the Foundation, Olafur Olafsson said Aurora was aware of the huge problem Ebola posed to Sierra Leone adding that it required every support possible.
He said the health crisis must not be allowed to put everything else on hold, adding that life needed to go on with what needed to be done to be done as there would be life after Ebola.
The First Lady said she was extremely pleased that the Foundation had decided to come into the country at a time when other people were scaring away. She thanked Aurora for the donation adding the items were needed in the fight against Ebola.
During Olafur’s last visit to Sierra Leone in February, he held discussions with Mrs Koroma where she outlined the needs of the country’s health system, stressing on the provision of a maternal health care facility for the benefit of underprivileged young girls and women.
Since then Aurora has been looking into the idea of building and operating a first class maternity home for women in need. The Foundation has consulted architects with experience to build health facilities across Africa and three experienced medical doctors to propose a design for the facility.
A team from the Foundation is presently in Sierra Leone on a fact-finding mission, consulting with the Ministry of Health and Sanitation on a location, design and size that will be best, to support the government’s health development strategy. It will be operated by the Foundation for three years and thereafter handed over to the Government of Sierra Leone. All services will provided free of cost.
