FBC fails to get interim student union

An attempt to install an interim students’ union body at the Fourah Bay College, FBC, on Monday failed after the college administration made a U-Turn, prompting students to walk out in protest.

For about three years FBC has not had a student union, after the last one was annulled in 2012. The college, which is part of the University of Sierra Leone, had accused the students of causing trouble through their union activism.

Le1.6 billion missing at agriculture

Officials of Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Food Security Monday appeared before the Public Accounts Committee, PAC, to explain about a missing Le1.6 billion.

The Committee is probing the ministry in line with the 2014 Audit report which indicated that over Le1billion was not adequately accounted for.

Water crisis hits south Sierra Leone

Some residents in the Southern district of Pujehun have expressed concerns over ‘constraints in accessing safe drinking water’ in their various localities.

The lack of safe drinking water has been a perennial problem in Pujehun town and other parts of the district.

The crisis has particularly affected chiefdoms like Kpaka, Galliness Perri, Sorogbeima, Mano Sakrim, YKK, and Kpanga Kabondeh.

Sierra Leone opposition picks holes in census results

The opposition Sierra Leone Peoples Party, SLPP, has called on the National Electoral Commission (NEC) not to use the provisional results of the 2015 Population and Housing Census to conduct the much anticipated boundary delimitation exercise.

SLPP wants figures from the 2004 census to be used while something is done about the latest census results which it has rejected, citing irregularities and claiming that the result was of a bias process.

AdvocAid wants Larceny Act repealed

A civil society group, Advoc Aid, is calling on the government to repeal the Larceny Act of 1916 saying it has caused only suffering for women rather than serve its intended purpose.

The current Larceny Act categories financial debt as a criminal act and the prescription could lead to prison term. Advoc Aid said women have been sent to prison for money as little as Le250, 000.

ECOWAS Commission gets new leadership

The ECOWAS [Economic Community for West African States] Commission last week inaugurated its new leadership, headed by Marcel Alain de Souza.

Outgoing President, Kadré Ouedraogo, officially handed over to his successor, de Souza of Benin, at a ceremony in the Nigerian capital Abuja, the seat of power for the West African regional bloc.
