Traditional leaders renew call for a Chamber of Chiefs

Paramount Chiefs from across the country have renewed their call for a special house of representatives to be set up comprising their membership.

Paramount Chief Alhaji Konoh Bundoh II of Gurama-Kono Chiefdom in Kono District made the latest call on behalf of his colleagues on the final day of the peace and national cohesion conference held at the Bintumani Conference Center in Freetown.

Statistics Sierra Leone defends mass sacking of "incompetent" staffers

The management of Statistics Sierra Leone has defended the sacking of over 200 workers it says are incompetent.

Officials of the government agency responsible for generating statistical data on Friday confirmed the dismissal of a total of 244 employees who they say were found to be either not qualified to serve in the positions they occupied or were recruited through the wrong procedure.

A new recruitment drive has been put in motion to fill the vacancies created by these sacking, they said.

Court acquits Sierra Leone FA President, Sec Gen

The suspended President of the Sierra Leone Football Association (SLFA), Isha Johansen, has been cleared of all corruption charges by the High Court of Sierra Leone.

The court presided over by Justice Reginald Fynn announced the verdict on Monday. Suspended Secretary General of SLFA Chris Kamara was also acquitted. Both Johansen and Kamara were on trial on three count charges on corruption related offences, a case which was brought against them by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).

Kenya, Rwanda share experience at Sierra Leone’s peace conference

Three African countries with similar history of unrests as Sierra Leone shared their experiences trying to bridge their differences at the just concluded peace conference in Freetown.
The National Dialogue Forum Democratic Consolidation for Peace and National Cohesion Conference, which was held from May 23 to 25, was aimed at uniting the country which is seen as sharply divided along political, ethnic and regional lines.

UN rep calls on political parties to take charge of Sierra Leone peace talks

The United Nations special representative in West Africa, Mohamed Ibn Chambas has urged political parties to take responsibility in discussing the way forward to consolidate peace in Sierra Leone.

“Government and actors on all levels, including political parties have a shared responsibility in ensuring that multiple grievances are addressed in a proper manner and that conflicts are resolved peacefully,” Chambas said on the opening ceremony of the national conference on peace.

Ahead of the three-day peace and cohesion conference which starts today, a high level UN and ECOWAS delegation arrived yesterday on a private jet. 

The head of the UN West Africa office, Dr. Mohamed  Ibn Chambas and two senior officers from ECOWAS, Aderemi Ajibewa (Director Political Affairs) and Ebenezer Asiedu (Head of Mediation) are here to add impetus to a conference already characterized by opposition boycotts. 

Rokel Secondary School Vice Principal arrested over exams malpractice

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested the Vice Principal of Rokel Secondary School, John Ibrahim Gbla, over allegations of examination malpractice. Gbla who also doubles as the head of WAEC exams at the school was arrested alongside Abu Bakar Mansaray, a Mathematics teacher at the school.

A spokesman for the ACC told Politico that the suspects were arrested after a report made by students.
