Row over marriage registration right in Sierra Leone

The Bo District Council and the Office of Registrar General are locked in a controversy over who has the mandate to conduct civil marriage.

The longstanding disagreement took a new turn when the Chairman of the Legislative Committee in Parliament, Daniel Koroma, recently declared that district councils across the country should immediately stop conducting Civil Marriage on behalf of the state.

MP urges Gov’t to increase school fee subsidy

The Member of Parliament for Constituency 025 in Kono District, Paul Saa Sam, has warned that the current amount paid as school fee subsidy by government for pre-primary and primary school pupils risk undermining the Free Quality Education (FQE) program.

Hon. Sam said the amount received by some schools is too little to make any difference, thereby affecting the learning process, especially for community schools.

Sierra Leone opens reopens oil exploration

Sierra Leone has reopened access to oil and gas exploration following the publication of direct and open tender processes this month.  The tender notice calls for applications from competent companies for exploration license. 

Timothy Kabba, Director General of the Petroleum Directorate, said as part of their criteria a license application must cover an area equivalent to at least three blocks. The size of each block amounts to 1,360km.

Sierra Leone braces up for money laundering evaluation

The Financial Intelligence Unit (FIU) has announced that Sierra Leone is preparing for a mutual evaluation on money laundering, terrorist financing and other activities that threatens the financial system of the country. They made the announcement at a press conference at their office on Tuesday.

Police release 13 Collegiate students

Sierra Leone Police have released 13 pupils of the West African Methodist Collegiate School. According to the Police the kids were arrested because of riotous conduct and disorderly behaviour on Monday.

On Monday a total of 25 pupils from the school were arrested following reports of riots in the area by the school pupils, which then later provoked more violent reactions by the larger student population.

Sierra Leone Police on Monday arrested 25 pupils of the West African Methodist Collegiate School. The Police say the kids were arrested because of riotous conduct and disorderly behaviour.

Official Police accounts from the Congo Cross Police Station states that Police went to the school following reports of riots in the area by the school pupils, which then later provoked more violent reactions by the larger student population.
