NGC critical of Speaker over Clerk’s saga

A Press Release dated 14th January 2024 from the National Grand Coalition (NGC) has criticised the Speaker of Parliament, Dr. Abass Bundu, for ‘aiding and abetting’ alleged corruption by Clerk of Parliament, Paran Tarawally.

Information Minister dismisses ‘planned protest’

The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah  has said Wednesday would be a day of usual business, noting that those who have planned to engage in any "illegal" activity on the said day would face the "fullest force" of the law.

Bah made this statement in the weekly Government Press Conference on Tuesday 16th of January this year hosted at the Foreign Affairs Ministry, in which he dispelled a rumoured protest for Wednesday, a day a court martial trial is expected to continue.

Sierra Leone president “partially fulfilled” 79% of promises – Andrew Lavalie

The Executive Director of the Institute for Governance Reform (IGR), Andrew Lavalie says seventy-nine percent of President Julius Maada Bio’s promises in his first term as a President were ‘partially fulfilled,’ according to a study conducted in Afrobarometer before the June 24 general election.

Lavalie who made this statement to the media at the Government’s weekly press briefing in Freetown on January 16, 2024, attributed his assertion to an Afrobarometer conducted before the June 2023 General Elections.

MP blames Parliament for Sierra Leone’s accountability gap

Deputy Leader of the Opposition Daniel B. Koroma has blamed Parliament for the country’s accountability issues despite the constitution empowering parliament to address such issues.

The MP made this statement on the 18th January 2024, whilst debating passionately on the bill entitled ‘National Monitoring and Evaluation Agency Act (NMEA) 2023’; and Koroma said “If parliament is made right, in less than six months this country will turn to paradise”.

China to support Sierra Leone Police

The Chinese Ambassador to Sierra Leone, Wang Qing has stated that his country is committed to capacitating the Sierra Leone Police with equipment.

Wang made this statement in his visit, together with the Sandong Police College team, to the Inspector General of Police, William Fayia Sellu at his George Street office, in Freetown on 17th January this year.

UN Women validates Women’s poll participation report

During a draft report discussion held by stakeholders, UN Women validated a report on how women faired in the 2023 multi-tier elections in Sierra Leone.

The discussion was held at the Sierra Palms Hotel in Freetown on the 18th of January 2024.
