Over environmental degradation, Green Scenery blames Gov’t

The environmental advocacy group, Green Scenery, has blamed the government for the current state of environmental degradation in the country.

The organization, in a statement, called on the government to put a ban on logging to protect the country’s environment after recent reports of escalation of indiscriminate logging.

Sierra Leone police commander accused of selling police land

A row has broken out in the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police in the southern region over the alleged sale of a piece of land belonging to the force.

The Local Unit Commander (LUC) of the Jendema Division in Pujehun District, Chief Superintendent (CSP) Edward Yamba, is accused of selling the plot of land which is located within the Jendema Police quarters to a private businessman.

The head of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) at the Mano River Division, Guy Patrick Chico Lansana Bussu, raised the alarm.

Sierra Leone to expand school feeding program

The Government of Sierra Leone is set to expand the school feeding program with the addition of more districts to those which currently benefit from the scheme.

The program, which is a key component of the government’s flagship Free Quality Education (FQE) scheme, has been boosted by a consignment of Chinese donated rice presented to the government last week.

The rice was presented through the Ministry of Agriculture by the Chinese government, for onward submission to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education.

Sierra Leone: Govt doles out Le 46 million to people living with disabilities

The National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPD) has given the sum of Le46 million to individuals and disability organizations as support to their programs and well-being.

In a ceremony held last week at the commission’s headquarters in Freetown, officials distributed cheques to three disabled people and three organizations run by disabled people.

University of Sierra Leone unveils business center

The Minister of Technical and Higher Education, Professor Aiah Kpakima, has on Tuesday January 21 unveiled a business center at the University of Sierra Leone (USL).

The facility, which is located at the Secretariat of the College of Medicine and Allied Health Sciences (COMAHS) at Lightfoot Boston Street in Freetown, will serve as an outlet for learning materials and other university paraphernalia like graduation gowns, files and other customized USL items.

Mining company pays tuition for female students

A mining company in Bo district, Supreme Minerals Corporation Sierra Leone, has paid tuition fees for 19 female students who are enrolled at the Milton Margai College of Education branch in the district.

The total amount paid on behalf of all 19 students is just above Le 28.2 million.

At a handing over ceremony of the scholarships on Saturday, the Director of the Corporation, Malik Chennam, said he was happy to invest in the future of the girls for the growth of the community.

Bailout for Sierra Leone school bus service

The government of Sierra Leone has announced a bailout plan for the school bus service which was prematurely halted earlier this month due to financial constraints.

The Ministry of Finance said on Tuesday that part of the funds allocated to the monthly cleaning exercise will be reallocated to Local Councils which are managing the school buses.
