Sierra Leone's president attends AU summit

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, left Freetown for South Africa on Saturday en route to Ethiopia.

In South Africa, President Bio is attending the Investing in African Mining Indaba 2020, the largest conference in mining in Africa, before heading for Addis Ababa where he is scheduled to attend the African Union Summit.

He is scheduled to deliver a keynote address at this year’s Mining Indaba which will be hosted in Cape Town, South Africa from 3rd – 6th February.

A press statement issued by the Office of Presidential Press Secretary at State House cited Tom Quinn, the Head of Content for Mining Indaba, as saying: “The theme for Investing in African Mining Indaba 2020 is ‘Optimising Growth and Investment in the Digitised Mining Economy’ – and His Excellency Julius Maada Wonie Bio is the new generation African leader, recognising that innovation and technology will drive mining investment on the continent”.

Last year’s Mining Indaba conference attracted around a thousand delegates, including CEOs of reputable mining companies, financiers, investors, government ministers and Heads of State like the President of South Africa and the President of Ghana.

“At this year’s event, President Bio has been recognised to deliver the keynote address for his admirable leadership in promoting reforms and safeguarding national interests in Sierra Leone’s mining sector,” the State House release notes.

It said the president will leave South Africa for Addis to where he will attend the 33rd Ordinary Session of the Assembly of the African Union Heads of State from 9th – 10th February.

The theme for the African Union Summit is: “Silencing the Guns: Creating Conducive Conditions for Africa’s Development”.

President will present a report as Chairperson of the Committee of Ten Heads of State and Government on the Reform of the United Nations Security Council at the AU Summit, which will also feature reports on the institutional reform of the African Union, the African Continental Free Trade Area and Peace and Security.
