Prison boss explains COVID-19 preparedness

The eastern region commander for the Sierra Leone Correctional Center, John Nabie Pessima, has said they have put measures in place to tackle any outbreak in the Kenema Correctional center weeks before the first confirmed case of Covid-19 was recorded in the country.

Mr Pessima on Tuesday told Politico that they have been practicing isolation and social distancing for inmates as part of these measures.

His assurance comes a day after the central prison in Freetown confirmed its first case of COVID-19.

ACC indicts school supervisor over Le20 million

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) says it has filed charges against a school principal, Alhaji Mohamed Foday Kamara, for offences bordering on misappropriation of public funds and property.

Mr Kamara was slammed with four counts charges of corruption, according to a statement issued by the Commission on Tuesday.

Kamara is Supervisor of Schools and a former Caretaker Principal of Schlenker Secondary School in Port Loko.

Finance Minister tours SALWACO treatment plant

With water being an essential component in the fight against the Coronavirus pandemic, Sierra Leone's Finance Minister, Jacob Jusu Saffa, has paid an unannounced visit to the water treatment plants of the Sierra Leone Water Company (SALWACO) in the provinces. 

Minister Saffa was accompanied by SALWACO's Managing Director, Joseph Munda Sandy, on the tour that took him to four district headquarters towns: Bo,  Kailahun, Kenema and Moyamba.

Coronavirus enters Sierra Leone's central prison

The Sierra Leone judiciary has ordered a nationwide cessation of all activities at the magistrate and high courts in an effort to prevent the spread of Covid-19 in the prisons and justice sectors. This, after an inmate tested positive for the virus.

A statement from the office of the Chief Justice said the suspect was on remand at the Pademba Road Prison where he reported ill. He was receiving treatment at the prisons health facility but tested positive for COVID-19 almost a week later.

Missing Sierra Leone policeman confirmed dead

The Sierra Leone Police has confirmed the death of Sergeant Nathaniel Lamin, who went missing over five weeks ago during a controversial operation in northern Sierra Leone.

Sgt Lamin went missing on the 17th of March after a raid on Mano Village in the outskirts of Magburaka in the Tonkolili district went bad. He was reportedly part of a team of seven police officers who had been deployed in the village to settle a dispute between farmers and herdsmen when they suddenly came under attack by the villagers.

Sierra Leone president rallies nation against Covid-19

Sierra Leone’s President, Julius Maada Bio, used his Independence Day address to rally support against the spiraling Covid-19 pandemic.

Bio appealed to Sierra Leoneans to bear with restrictions imposed as part of efforts to contain the virus, noting that as unbearable as they feel, they are necessary to get life back to normalcy.
