Sierra Leone pays out over Le 42 Billion as school fees

The Ministry of Finance has announced the payment of Le 42,883,440,000 as tuition fees for children in government-owned and government-assisted primary and secondary schools across the country.

Some 1,871,188 pupils are covered as part of the government’s Free Quality Education programme.

Aviation to go digital before airport reopens in Sierra Leone

Sierra Leone is setting up its aviation industry to go all-out digital before it reopens its airspace. President Julius Maada Bio and the Director General of the Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority, Moses Tiffa Baio both said on Tuesday that proper automated plans had to be put in place to prevent the importation of the coronavirus in the country.

Pan Africanists want Colonial symbols down in Sierra Leone

Pan-African campaigners in Sierra Leone have urged the government to “decolonize” Sierra Leone by removing colonial symbols and renaming major edifices that were renamed after colonizers.

In a statement, the Administrative Committee Member of the Pan-Africanist Movement, Abdul Malik Kamara said their call was part of the broader global call for the African continent and its people to “break free from the shackles of White supremacy”.

Kekeh rider remanded on murder charge

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie, on Wednesday 24th June remanded Ibrahim Kamara who rides a tricycle taxi (locally known as Kekeh) into the custody of the correctional services in Freetown at the start of preliminary investigations into a one count charge of murder against the 23 year-old.

Police prosecutors allege that Kamara, on Saturday 31st of August 2019 along Regent Road, Lumley in the Western Area of Sierra Leone murdered Sheku Samura who was also a tricycle taxi rider.  

Two men accused of larceny get bail

Ibrahim Tholley and Foday Senesie both accused of conspiracy and larceny have been released on bail at a magistrate’s court in Freetown. Magistrate Hannah Bonnie admitted them to a Le5, 000,000 bail backed by one surety who should be a Sierra Leonean resident in Freetown with a valid national identification card.

Blyden’s bail restored

Magistrate Hannah Bonnie has restored the bail conditions of former Social Welfare minister Dr. Sylvia Blyden. The bail was withdrawn after the accused was told she failed to adhere to the orders of the court.

Sierra Leone parliamentarian duped Le 50 Million

Independent Member of Parliament Hon. Emilia Lolo Tongi of Constituency 001 in Kailahun district in the Eastern Province of Sierra Leone testified before Magistrate Hannah Bonnie in Freetown on Wednesday 24 June, claiming she was duped the sum of Le 50 million by one Tejan Conteh.
