Former Sierra Leone president linked to attempted coup

Bodyguards of the former President, Ernest Bai Koroma, were involved in the attempted coup of 26th November 2023, according to Chief of Defence Staff, Lieutenant-General Peter Lavahun.

Lavahum made this statement at the government’s weekly press conference held at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Tower Hill, Freetown on 28th November 2023.

14 soldiers killed in attempted coup in Sierra Leone

The Minister of Information and Civic Education, Chernor Bah has confirmed that fourteen soldiers were killed during the 26th November attack at the Wilberforce Barracks Armory.

Bah made this statement at the Government’s weekly press briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Conference room, Freetown on 28th November. 

76,000 Sierra Leoneans living with HIV/AIDS

The Director General of the National Aids Secretariat (NAS) in Sierra Leone, Abdul Rahman Sesay has said seventy-six thousand Sierra Leoneans are living with HIV and AIDS.

Sesay made this statement in an interview with Politico on 29th November 2023 ahead of the commemoration of HIV Day, today December 1st of every year.

ECOWAS backs Sierra Leone’s president amid attempted coup

Following a press statement from the Economic Community of West Africa States (ECOWAS) condemning the latest shooting incident in Freetown, an envoy from the regional block and the government of Nigeria have recommitted their support in ensuring the stability of President Julius Maada Bio’s government.

Civil society groups condemn attempted coup

Democracy Network (DemNet), a network of civil society activists and media practitioners, as well as a Consortium of Civil Society Organisation in the country have expressed strong concerns over the November 26 shootings by unknown gunmen in the morning hours of Sunday.

DemNet condemned the disturbances in Freetown which it said was a well-orchestrated attempt to hijack the military armory in Wilberforce, although they said they still do not have clear information on the perpetrators.
