Bombali Human Rights Committee Raises Concern over Makeni Violence

An umbrella group of various organisations called Bombali District Human Rights Committee (BDHRC) has issued a statement in which concerns were raised over events surrounding a protest by angry residents in the city of Makeni last month.

The incident reportedly claimed five lives.

While acknowledging the efforts of President Julius Maada Bio to address the concerns, the Committee pointed out that there was still ‘’an uneasy calm, state of fear,” and that an “atmosphere of uncertainty has persisted in the city of Makeni’’.

AAH donates water tanks to health centers

Action Against Hunger (AAH) has donated water tanks to nine community health centers in the Western Area. The organization said the donation is part of their COVID-19 Emergency Response Program.

On Thursday each of the nine health centers commissioned their 5000 liter water tanks. Some of the health centers are located in areas like Lakka, Wilberforce, Hastings and Campbell Town, where water crisis is a perennial problem.

Former Freetown Mayor freed on bail

The High Court in Freetown has admitted the former Mayor of Freetown Herbert George-Williams to bail along with his co-accused Abu Bakarr Daramy, both of whom are facing two counts charges of murder and conspiracy to commit grievous bodily harm. They were released on a Le500, 000, 000 bond, backed by two sureties in like sum who are to produce one conveyance each for a property registered with the office of the Registrar General. 

Juvenile home manager remanded for illegally releasing inmates

Justice Alfred Tommy Ganda of the High Court in Bo has remanded the manager of the Juvenile Detention Center in the custody of the Bo Correctional Service for allegedly releasing inmates illegally. Samuel Kamara was booked for releasing Simeon Brassay and Matthew Missalie who were serving a four year jail term each after being convicted for robbery.

Covid19 responders down tools in Pujehun

Health workers at the Pujehun Covid-19 treatment center say they have stopped working because they have not been paid their weekly hazard allowances since they started working there in May.

A spokeswoman for the group, who cannot be named, said those affected were one medical doctor, nine nurses, four cleaners, two sprayers, one community health officer, four cooks and one data entry clerk.
