The Secretary for the Kenema Government Hospital, Foday Saffa, has expressed concern over the lack of interest in addressing the issue of the fleet of stationary vehicles within the compound of the hospital. Saffa told politico that all the vehicles were believed to have mechanical problems and have been there for a long time. He said a meeting was some time ago arranged between the hospital management and the district health management team to discuss about the vehicles but that the meeting itself was inconclusive on what to do with them.
He maintained that had it not been for the ambulances assigned to the hospital for emergencies, work could have been seriously affected, but he was quick to point out that an ambulance cannot do the other general duty that other vehicles can. He listed 9 vehicles that he disclosed were still in the compound and even noted that he had been told some needed just minor repairs.
Saffa was crystal clear that the hospital management had no funds designated for any vehicle repair, saying that funds available were for the general services of the hospital. He pointed out that the decision of repairing the vehicles would have to come from the Ministry of health’s transport sector.
An official within the hospital, who preferred not to be named, expressed fears that the vehicles might be cannibalized for personal gains by ill-disposed persons within the hospital administration if urgent action is not taken.
