Over Makeni Riot civil society blames stakeholders

A group of civil society organizations (CSOs) has expressed disappointment at local actors in Makeni for their lack of coordination and and failure to make follow-up on the outcome of a stakeholders meeting which preceded the temporary transfer of a standby generator, resulting in last month’s deadly violence.

The recommendations emanating from the recent report by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on the status of the Malaysian owned private university – Limkokwing – has left its students optimistic about their future.

Over 1000 students have been stuck at home for months after the school was effectively shut down following disagreement between the management and the government over payment.

Sierra Leone to revamp domestic air transport

The Sierra Leone government is working on revamping domestic air transport as part of its effort to improve on the larger air transportation system in the country.

Officials say the move is also aimed at easing transportation and boosting trade both locally and within the sub region.

Last week a team from the aviation sector, headed by officials from the Ministry of Transport and Aviation, conducted a joint monitoring visit to defunct air fields in Kenema and Bo districts.

Bo: New Site community gets electricity transformer

The Minister of Energy, Alhaji Kanja Sesay, has commissioned a new 315 KVA power transformer at New Site Community in Bo. 

The community, which according to residents went for over 15 years without electricity, was lit up on Saturday, 8th August, at a special ceremony at the Toyota Garage, in the presence of hundreds of community members.

"Light don cam, light don cam. tenki Alhaji Kanja," the happy residents shouted as the Minister switched on the power.

Sierra Leone chiefs get 150% pay rise

The Government of Sierra Leone has announced a 150% increase in the remuneration of local authorities such as Paramount Chiefs, Regent Chiefs, Chiefdom Speakers and other chiefdom functionaries, as well as Western Area Tribal Headmen.

The increment, according to a press statement from the Ministry of Finance, takes effect from April this year. It said the move was in line with the government’s strategy to improve on chiefdom governance and strengthen chiefdom councils.

Randy Skaikay docked again

Randa Skaikay, a former employee of businessman Ali Abess, was arraigned before Justice Momoh Jah Stevens of the High Court in Freetown on Monday to answer to a two-count, fresh indictment of larceny in a dwelling house and larceny by servant after an earlier case was dismissed by another judge on grounds of ‘‘defective indictment.’’
