Schools are to reopen next month, according to a Press release from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE). The release says that the decision was reached ‘’after extensive consultations by stakeholders and policy makers in the education sector’’.
Pre- primary schools are to reopen on the 15th September, whilst Primary, Junior and Senior Secondary Schools will resume classes on the 5th October, according to the statement.
Cognisance of the effect the abrupt closure of schools in March would have had on students in the wake of the coronavirus threat, the release outlined a number of guidelines that school authorities should follow such as the quick completion of assessment of all students using a comprehensive evaluation guide to also include continuous assessment for the 2019/2020 academic year.
Schools have also been urged to take full responsibility to complete promotions in a transparent manner. The process is to be monitored by officials from the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary School Education (MBSSE).
The Education Ministry says it will continue to work with all stakeholders, including the National Covid-19 Emergency Response Center (NaCOVERC) to ensure that learning happens in a safe environment. Parents and communities have also been urged to support the learning of the children by adhering to the public health guidelines instituted to curb the COVID-19 pandemic.
On another note, the Radio Teaching Programme is to be expanded and more especially ‘’increase access and focus on learners transitioning to SSS2”, the release points out.
Also MBSSE says in collaboration with Sector Partners, Civil Society Organisations, parents and communities, it will support ”Accelerated Learning” activities through the new “Basic Curriculum Framework, Civic Education Framework and curriculum materials being updated by the Ministry’’.
Government ordered the closure of all schools in March this year over fears of COVID-19.
