Sierra Leone Youth Ministry engages youths on new policy

The Ministry of Youth Affairs has engaged representatives of youth groups in the Eastern region on the validation of the national youth policy. The event took place at the district council hall in Kenema.

Addressing the gathering, the Minister of youths affairs, Mohamed Orman Bangura, told the young people that "the essence of this validation is to help plan for the youths for the next five years".

13 charged and remanded over Makeni riots

Thirteen people accused of participating in last month’s violent unrest in Makeni town in the Bombali District, resulting in the death of five people have been remanded into the custody of the Correctional Services after their first appearance before Magistrate Mark Ngegba in Freetown on Monday.

The accused persons face seven counts including conspiracy to commit a felony, carrying offensive weapon without lawful authority or disorderly behavior, riotous conduct, throwing missiles and malicious damage.

Sierra Leoine arraigns opposition politician for "sexual offence"

Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray, the Chairman and Leader of the National Democratic Alliance Party, has appeared before Justice Samuel O. Taylor at the sexual offenses divisions of the High Court in Freetown to answer to an eight-count indictment, including conspiracy, sexual penetration and meeting a child for sexual purposes among others.

The 2018 presidential candidate is jointly charged with one Marion Arouni, who faces the counts of conspiracy and aiding and abetting the commission of an offense.  

Sierra Leone police boss warns riot police over excessive force

The Inspector General (IGP) of the Sierra Leone Police (SLP), Ambrose Sovula, has warned the armed unit of the Sierra Leone Police, the Operations Support Division (OSD) to refrain from the use of excessive force in their response to riot and other violent situations.

The IGP made this statement whiles addressing a group of OSDs at their headquarters in Freetown on issues of their welfare and the review of the ranking structure of the force.

HRCSL blames Makeni riot on communication gap

MAN GETS 10 YEARS FOR SEXUAL PENETRATION

The sexual offences division of the High Court in Freetown has sentenced 21-year old Alpha Sesay to ten years in jail including the time he spent on remand. Sesay was found guilty of a one-count indictment of sexual penetration of a child below the age of 18.

Delivering his judgement on Monday 17th August 2020, Justice Momoh Jah Stevens noted that because the accused didn’t waste the court’s time by confessing to have engaged in the act of sexual penetration with the victim, he was handing down a minimum sentence.
