"Victim" of a gang-rape testifies in court

A 13-year old girl who was allegedly gang raped by three men has testified before Justice Manuela Jennifer Harding at the sexual offences division of the High Court in Freetown.

Led in evidence by State prosecutor Robin Mason Jr. on Friday 25th September, 2020, the witness described herself as a school pupil and recognized the accused person.

Calls for a ban on political rallies

Stakeholders at a Town Hall meeting in Kossoh Town, in the Western Rural Area, have called for a ban on political party rallies during elections. The meeting, which was organised by the regional office of the National Commission for Democracy (NCD), also attracted calls for easing of political tension in the country and the recall or petitioning of Members of Parliament (MPs) who abandon their constituents.

NATCOM plans consumer protection survey

The National Telecommunications Commission is planning to roll out a consumer protection survey next year. The survey is expected to inform the policy of the commission to better protect consumers from exploitation by telecommunication services providers in the country.

A letter from the Director General, Daniel Kiatibi to the staff of the commission states that instructions had already been given to the Director of Cooperate and Industry Affairs.

Kingho takes over Tonkolili Mines in Sierra Leone

Kingho Mining, a subsidiary of the Chinese group Kingho Investment Company Limited, has taken over the Tonkolili Mines after months of tripartite negotiation which involved the Government of Sierra Leone, the Chinese Embassy and the company officials. The takeover was completed at a ceremony held in the northern town of Bumbuna and later at the mining site on Wednesday.

Mines Ministry to restructure Diamond Development Fund

The Minister of Mines and Mineral Resources, Timothy Kabba, has told Politico that the ministry is on the verge of restructuring the Diamond Development Fund.

The fund is meant to disburse to Paramount Chiefs of mining communities so they will embark on development projects. Surface rent and other benefits are put in to the fund and disbursed to communities based on the scale of mining activity in their community or the number of companies operating in the area.
