MRCG calls for security and safety of Sierra Leone journalists

As Sierra Leone joins the rest of the world to commemorate the International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists, the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) has in a press statement called for enhanced security and protection of journalists.

November 2nd was declared by the United Nations General Assembly as the ‘International Day to End Impunity for Crimes Against Journalists’. The Security Council Resolution urged Member States to implement definite measures countering the present culture of impunity.

Varsity students riot in southern Sierra Leone

There was an uneasy calm over the weekend in and around Mokonde and Mosongo, the two host communities of Njala University in Moyamba District, which were the scenes of a violent riot sparked by allegations of cannibalism earlier in the week.

In a bid to ensure dialogue and inclusiveness in the governance processes of Sierra Leone, President Julius Maada Bio has inaugurated the Government Civil Society Organization (CSO) and Dialogue Series.

The inauguration ceremony, which was held at the Freetown Conference Centre at Bintumani Hotel on Friday, October 30, brought together CSOs, government officials and development partners, with the aim of helping strengthen and consolidate the country’s democratic values.

Sierra Leone Supreme Court finds Lawyer Augustine Sengbeh Marrah guilty of criminal contempt

The Supreme Court of Sierra Leone has found Lawyer Augustine Sorie-Sengbe Marrah guilty on a one-count indictment of criminal contempt.

The lawyer was summoned before the court over what they referred to as his unprofessional conduct.

It followed Lawyer Marrah’s failure to honour the court’s directive demanding him to appear before after his publication on social media, which the judiciary referred to as contemptuous and demeaning to the sanctity and integrity of the court.

CSO calls on gov’t to honour DACDF
