Security concerns over Falaba border areas

The Falaba District Security Co-ordinator, Office of National Security, Tommy Koromba has cautiously spoken about security concerns along the border district in the north of the country. According to Koromba, Falaba district has seven official crossing points along the border with the Republic of Guinea but only four - Gbentu, Fulamansa, Walia Koindukura and Mansofinya have the presence of police and immigration officers. This he said could compromise the security arrangements in that part of the country.

SEVEN SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER

Justice Monfred Sesay has sentenced seven men to death after they were convicted of three counts of conspiracy to murder, murder and robbery with aggravation.

A jury at the High Court in Freetown returned a unanimous guilty verdict on the counts of murder and robbery with aggravation against Daniel Sellu (alias Dust), John Junior Kamara (alias Little), Albert Momoh (alias Rasta), Alfred James Momoh (alias Lion), Mohamed Fernado Kanu (alias Juda), Christopher Sellu (alias Wizzy) and Alferd Sullay Momoh (alias Timaya).

Sierra Leone's First Lady to support Milton Margai

As Milton Margai becomes a Technical University, Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Bio, has promised to support the institution with 50 scholarships and 20 beds for the students.

Mrs Bio made this disclosure during a presentation at the Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET), moment before it was declared a technical university by President Julius Maada Bio at the transformation ceremony on the 6th of December this year.

Save the Children and partners raise awareness on adolescent health

Save the Children Sierra Leone, a non-governmental organization that seeks solutions to the challenges faced by children in Sierra Leone has in partnership with other organizations conducted a campaign walk aimed at raising awareness on the negative effects of adolescent pregnancy.

The event which took place over the weekend under the theme (mi bodi nar mi right) was part of activities commemorating 16 days of activism which started on the 25th October 2020.

Ministry of Labour popularizes policy for the aged

In an effort to ensure that the wellbeing of the aged are catered for in Sierra Leone, The Ministry of Labour and Social Security on 7th December 2020 officially launched the policy for the aged in Kenema, eastern Sierra Leone.

The event attracted participants from the three districts of the region; Kailahun, Kono and Kenema, and in attendance were old people and public officials.

Sierra Leone's Education Minister faces Parliament

Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education (MBSSE), Dr. Moinina David Sengeh, has defended the Bio administration’s education policy, amidst concerns among lawmakers.

Dr Sengeh appeared before the House of Parliament on Tuesday, 8th December, after he was summoned by the lawmakers who expressed concern over the poor performance of Sierra Leonean students in this year’s West African Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (WASSCE).

Milton Margai finally gets university status

Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has declared the   Milton Margai College of Education and Technology (MMCET) as a Technical University.

The president made the pronouncement on Sunday, December 6th, at the MMCET campus at Goderich in Freetown, where he disclosed that Le3.5 billion awaited the institution as Skills Development Fund for improvement of its infrastructure and among other things.

The status of the institution will have to be confirmed by parliament for it to become official.
