New Media Studies book launched in Sierra Leone

A book titled Media Studies – Critical African and De-colonial Approaches which is a collection of articles contributed mostly by seasoned scholars with knowledge on Africa media was on Friday 22 January 2020 launched in Freetown by veteran Sierra Leonean media personality Dr. Ibrahim Seaga Shaw.

The event at the Sierra Library Board hall which attracted senior media scholars, practitioners and students also saw a review of Dr. Shaw’s written chapter ‘Critical Perspectives on African Journalism’.

Sierra Leone: Graphic account of the Rogbere killing

Residents of Rogbere Junction in Port Loko District are still in shock following the brutal killing of a 33-year-old popular businessman Mohamed Kamara commonly called ‘Speed O’.

Reports say a group of people believed to be armed robbers broke into his home in the early hours of Wednesday 13 January 2021 and subsequently killed him.

Sierra Leone capital isolated from rest of the country

Freetown and its environs are to be cut off from the rest of the country in a bid to stem the spread of the new wave of Covid19.

A statement from NACOVERC says effective 25 January the Western Area will go into a partial lockdown for two weeks. Movement from and into the region will be restricted to only essential travels that will be regulated by an Electronic Pass system. Even those allowed to travel will be subjected to a Covid19 test.

A nationwide 10 pm to 5am curfew will also come into force within the same period.

Sierra Leone Gov’t orders sachet water price down

The Sierra Leone Electricity & Water Regulatory Commission has ordered the producers of sachet water to desist forthwith from selling at any new price. It follows recent increase in the prices of the liquid in Freetown some by almost 40%.

The sudden increase in price has also affected other parts of the country like Kenema.

Attempted murder suspect leaves police cell in Falaba

With no major damage to the doors, a suspect charged with unlawful possession of a gun and attempted murder waiting to be conveyed to Kabala has reportedly escaped from police cell at the Mongo Division in Falaba District for the second time in a row.

Yibba Kamara had been rounded up and handed over to the Sierra Leone Police by a military officer for attacking and attempting to kill one Abu Konta Marah for the third time in Mongo Bendugu Town.

50-bed hospital for remote Kono communities

Construction of a 50-bed hospital for the benefit of the eight communities in the Tensedakor Section in Kono District which started in 2019 is nearing completion. During a visit to Louma, one of the beneficiary communities, Mohamed Savage the National Coordinator of SIERRASOTA, the organization undertaking the project said the project was born out of the need to alleviate the community’s challenges in accessing health care over the years.
