Sierra Leone political parties reject non-partisan local elections

Two political parties the NGC and Unity Party have in a debate organized by the Sierra Eye magazine and the Institute of Legal Research and Advocacy for Justice kicked against the idea of non-partisan local council election across the country referring to it as a political ploy by the current government to strengthen their hold on power.

According to the debate moderator Umaru Fofana the 2020 National Decentralization Policy was now with the law officers department and will soon be tabled in parliament.

Sierra Leone president launches loan scheme for women

President Julius Maada Bio on Friday 12th February 2021 handed over cheques with a total value of 26 billion Leones to ten Financial Service Providers (FSP)  during the launch of the Munafa Fund loan scheme initiated by the government for petty traders and medium business owners.

Sierra Leone: First senior secondary school in Magbass

President Julius Maada Bio has commissioned the first Senior Secondary School at Magbass, in the Mamuntha and Mayossoh Sections in Kholifa Rowalla Chiefdom, Tonkolili District.

The school was constructed by the country’s Minister of Youth Affairs, Mohammed Orman Bangura, a native of the area, and named after President Julius Maada Bio.

Parliament halts Chinese company's tax exemptions in Sierra Leone

The Parliamentary Oversight Committee on Mines and Mineral Resources has concluded that with effect from 15th March 2021, the iron ore miner Kingho should the operationalization of the committee referred to as the “un-ratified mining lease agreement” which exempts the company from paying tax.

The committee also ruled that with immediate effect from Monday 15th March 2021, the mining lease agreement with Kingho Mining Limited should be submitted to the Clerk of Parliament.

Fisheries Ministry increases surveillance measures

The Minister of Fisheries and Marine Resources, Emma  Kowa Jalloh has told journalists that the  Ministry is increasing  measures to counter illegal fishing and  enable proper stock assessment of the country’s marine resources.

Sierra Leone gets two more pathologists

Sierra Leone's only trained and qualified forensic pathologist, Dr. Simeon Owizz Koroma has welcomed government’s recruitment of two other pathologists to the department.

“I was called and formally introduced to the new recruits. This is something I have been longing for and it will ease the pressure on me especially from the medical school... I will not be spending time now under the microscope and that will ease my problems in light of exhumations, burial, citification and more,” he said.
