SLPP condemns intraparty violence

Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) National Executive Council (NEC) has in a statement condemned the violence that took place on Tuesday, 29th June 2021 at the party’s Headquarters in Freetown.

Carrying placards denouncing any further extension of the mandate of the party’s national executive council, the protesters on Tuesday 29th June 2021 said they wanted new elections to be conducted to choose their leaders since the current holders of various positions had already been extended three times. 

Sierra Leone reacts to increased fuel pump price

People across Sierra Leone have with mixed feelings reacted to the increase in the pump price of petroleum products in the country by 12% as announced by the Petroleum Regulatory Agency (PRA) on Thursday 1 July 2021.

The increase according to the government was influenced by a number of factors among which is smuggling, lack of adequate storage facility to  house the required amount of fuel for the population, non-government participation in the importation, storage, and distribution of petroleum products, among others.      

Life imprisonment for rapist in Sierra Leone

Justice Momoh Jah-Stevens has on Wednesday 30th July 2021 sentenced one Joseph Lamin to life imprisonment at the High Court in Freetown for sexually penetrating a 9-year-old class 2 pupil in Freetown.

Medical reports from the Princess Christian Maternity Hospital (PCMH) also known as Cottage, stated that Lamin penetrated the child in both anus and vagina. The report also stated that the child suffered several bruises on her face.

DSTI launches Ecosystem Entrepreneurship programme

The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) has launched the Ecosystem Entrepreneurship programme aimed at fostering coordination and promotion of activities by local entrepreneurs in the country. The event which was hosted in Freetown saw development experts within and out of the country, exchange ideas on how local entrepreneurs can partner with international businesses to improve the sector.

Training to combat money laundering & terrorist financing ends

The German Corporation for International Cooperation (GIZ) and Mano River Union (MRU) has completed a two-day in-person and virtual training of Criminal Investigations and Prosecution Authorities on money laundering and terrorism financing through the smuggling of precious stones and metals in the MRU.

Debate on presidential speech ends today

The Parliament of Sierra Leone will today 2nd July end the debate on the speech delivered President Julius Maada Bio in Parliament on the 18th May 2021. The debate started on the 28th June 2021.

Speaking at the well of parliament on Thursday 1st July 2021, Member of Parliament, Abdul Murray Conteh of constituency 130 thanked President Julius Maada Bio for “an inspiring speech”.

GIZ support PHUs with solar panels

The Kenema District Health Management Team (DHMT) has on the 30th June, 2021, received sixty solar panels for use in the Peripheral Health Units across the district.

Presenting the items to the team, the representative from Tara Energy, the company charged with the installation of the solar panels at the PHUs, Mohamed Kamara said the support was due to the many concerns from health sector workers on the lack of adequate electricity in the health facilities.
