Sierra Leone’s Attorney General and Minister of Justice says he is proud of his stewardship, one year since his appointment by President Julius Maada Bio.
Longstanding lawyer, Anthony Brewah told Politico that he and his team had in the last 12 months been able to file 1,652 indictments, among them 659 bordering on sexual offences.
Of those sexual offence indictments there have been 284 convictions.
“I feel comfortable in the last one year because I have enjoyed the cooperation of all in the office and judiciary” Brewah said.
He added that the cooperation and support of all had been tremendous, which he said had made possible the establishment of magistrate courts for the first time in Falaba and Karena districts, while resident judges had been sent to Moyamba, Pujehun, Kailahun, Kabala and Port Loko.
The 66-year-old who was called to the bar more than 30 years ago – the same year as the Chief Justice Babatunde Edwards – said he and his team hoped to achieve a lot more in the future.
They have also succeeded in indicting seven matters relating to human trafficking, six of which were in the Western Area and one in the south.
They have given advice on 1,714 files in the year under review, while 16 laws were enacted and 27 statutory instruments laid in parliament including the repeal of the obnoxious criminal and seditious libel law.
