Low funding blamed for ineffectiveness of Sierra Leone's local councils

Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Local Council in Parliament Abdul Karim Kamara from constituency 059 has stated that several sectors have not grown as a result of inadequate resources sent to local councils.

The MP whilst debating in Parliament  on the Local Government Act, 2021 on Wednesday, highlighted education, health, and agriculture as sectors being unable to improve as a result of insufficient resources given to councils.    

2 charged with malicious damage

Two persons have been charged for unlawfully entering into a land that is under the watch of one Michael Jalloh, the complainant, at Tokeh village, Goderich, Freetown, and maliciously damaging a makeshift structure (pan body).

The accused, Bernard Tawarally (1st) and Alfred Thompson (2nd) made their first appearance at the Magistrate Court No. 2 on Wednesday 27th July 2022 to answer to charges of trespassing, malicious damage, and larceny contrary to the laws of Sierra Leone.

Sierra Leone tables radical land bills

The clouds are clearing up and the dark days where women in the provinces could not enjoy equal or any inheritance from their father’s lands like their male siblings will soon be over. The bill entitled the Customary Land Rights Bill 2021 has proposed that women should enjoy equal land rights as their male family members. 

Clause 7(3) of the proposed bill states that:“Where family land is to be bequeathed or sub-divided among the family, both male and female members of the family shall be treated equally and enjoy the same rights”.

Briton found dead in Sierra Leone hotel

Police have confirmed the death of a British national whose body was found in a hotel room at Aberdeen, Freetown.

A statement from the Police said Alexander Wings was found dead on Sunday 24th July 2022 at Hotel Bamoi.

Alleged police killing in Garangawa

One Santigie Conteh at the Garangawa village in Ngowahun Chiefdom, Bombali District, has been reported dead after a shooting incident allegedly by the Sierra Leone Police.

The incident according to the Member of Parliament (MP), Dr. Mark Mahmoud Kalokoh representing constituency 032 in Bombali District happened after the villagers expressed concerns about the manner of arrest of one Abass Conteh, by the police.
