Prosecution to close case in Freetown Mayor's trial

Following the end of testimony of the prosecuting witness, Po;ice Officer Mohamed Jusu, in the matter between the State and the Freetown Mayor, Yvonne Aki-Sawyerr, the Prosecutor, Yusuf Isaac Sesay, on Friday November 4 stated that they would lead in other witnesses on the 14th November 2022 at which time they would be closing their case.

Mayor Aki Sawyer is before the court to answer to two charges of Obstruction of Police Duty and Disorderly Behaviour.

Concerns over new water rate pricing in Sierra Leone

Residents of Mambo community in the Western Rural District have expressed their dissatisfaction over the sudden increase in the cost of water sold by the Guma Valley Water Company.

The increment in the cost for a bowser of the water supply happened within a week, according to a Mambo resident who asked not to be named.

He told Politico that the community is not connected to the company’s transmission pipe that supplies water to the Capital Freetown, and that they have to buy water transported by the company’s bowsers.

Sierra Leone to sit High Court in towns outside district headquarters

In a bid to decongest Correctional Centres and expedite trial of criminal cases across the country, the Judiciary of Sierra Leone is to hold its special criminal High Court sessions in places where there are no sitting high court judges.

This is according to a press release from the Communications Unit of the judiciary of Serra Leone.

Sierra Leone Police dismisses officer for drug abuse

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has dismissed  Constable  Alie Sankoh after a video of the officer emerged on social media showing him to be under what the Police in a statement said was the influence of drugs and alcohol.

 The 4th November,2022, statement from the Police said  the video surfaced on social media on Thursday November 3, 2022,   and that the SLP’s  Management wasted no time but to act swiftly to ascertain not only the veracity of the video, but also the identity of the Police Officer that was portrayed in it.

Sierra Leone UN chief solicits collaboration to fight climate change

The United Nations Resident Coordinator for Sierra Leone, Dr Babatunde A. Ahonsi, has urged citizens to have an effective collaboration in the fight against Climate Change.

Dr Ahonsi made this called last week during his engagement with fishing boat owners in the coastal fishing community of Tombo along the Freetown Peninsula.

OTC holds awareness in disability issues

A disability organization in Kenema, Opportunity Training Centre (OTC) with support from Engineers Without Borders/Demark (EWB/DK) has conducted community outreach programmes in three chiefdoms in Kenema district, raising awareness about persons living with disability in those chiefdoms.

Geima, Dama chiefdom, Blama in the Small Bo chiefdom and Largo in the Nongowa chiefdom served as points of convergence for people from outlying villages for the sensitization initiative.

SLP trains personnel on crime investigation

The Sierra Leone Police (SLP) has ended a two day refresher training of Detectives attached to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) from various divisions in the Eastern region.

The training commenced at the Reservation Quarter in Kenema on the 4th and ended on the 5th November, 2022.
