Sierra Leone tops Africa in extractives compliance

A Validation report on Sierra Leone Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative (SLEITI) was yesterday presented to President Julius Maada Bio at State House in Freetown, highlighting for the first time an overall high scorecard of 87.5 points thereby placing Sierra Leone amongst the top performing countries in the continent on compliance.

It is a global standard for transparency and accountability in the Oil, Gas and Mining Sectors, supporting local stakeholders in the implementation of extractive sector reforms.

Sierra Leone denies Turkey deports 40 of its nationals

The Sierra Leone Embassy in Turkey has in a press release dated 9th November denied the deportation of 40 Sierra Leoneans from the country, referring to the information on social media as baseless.

It however confirmed the deportation of seven Sierra Leoneans who reportedly violated different laws of their host country.

The Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Educatio, Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has promised to take stern action against those principals involved in the act of collecting money from parents of repeating pupils before admitting to their schools.

Civil society highlights priority areas for Sierra Leone’s budget 2023

As Finance Minister takes the 2023 Government Budget to Parliament today Friday, the Country Coordinator of Budget Advocacy Network, (BAN) Abu Bakarr Kamara has highlighted Agriculture, Social Welfare and Health as sectors their  institution would want the  budget to give priority.

Bangura told Politico  that  food prices have gone up, coupled with the high inflation, and as such they at BAN are expecting to see a budget that caters more for the vulnerable people whom he said are most affected.

FBC gets new digital learning hubs

The Directorate of Science, Technology and Innovation (DSTI) in partnership with UNICEF has established a new Digital Learning Hub (DLH) at Fourah Bay College (FBC) that is expected to increase students’ knowledge in Information, Communication and Technology (ICTs).

The hub was launched at the New Multi-purpose building at Fourah Bay College on the 7th November, 2022.

All laws to get gender dimension in Sierra Leone – GEWE bill proposes

The Minister of Gender and Children’s Affairs Manti Tarawalli has said that the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Bill has proposed that all laws should ensure that there is a gender dimension in them.

Speaking to journalists after the second reading of the bill entitled the ‘Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Act of 2021’ on the 9th November 2022 in parliament, she explained that  the bill seeks to ensure that all laws have aspects on gender issues ensuring that women are protected.
