Sierra Leone jails 3 for dangerous new synthetic KUSH drug

Magistrate Mark Ngegba of the Pademba Road Court No. 1 in Freetown has sentenced Yayah Kanu, Mohamed Kanu, and Mariama Bah to one year imprisonment after they pleaded guilty of possessing a drug called “kush” and ordered each to make an immediate payment of NLe 1,000 (one thousand Leones) as fine.

The three convicts - Yayah, 27, a trader; Mohamed, 30, a trader; and Mariama, 25, who is unemployed - were charged with Unlawful Possession of Kush contrary to section 48(1) of the Pharmacy and Drugs Act of 2001.

According to the charge sheet, on Tuesday 1st November 2022 at Fisher Street Market in Freetown, Yayah was found in possession of 96 wraps of kush contained in a black plastic bag weighing 3 grams, Mohamed at Magazine Cut in Freetown with 20 wraps of the drug in a transparent sachet weighing 0.3 grams, and Mariama at Mabella in Freetown with 10 wraps of kush contained in a transparent sachet weighing 0.1 gram without lawful authority.

In their plea on Monday November 14, the three accused sought from the bench tempering justice with mercy.However Magistrate Ngegba, without wasting any time, sent the three to prison.

Inspector Kadie M. Taylor prosecuted the matter.
