In what many gender activists have referred to as a bnetrayal of women, the proposed 30% safe seat clause for Women has been omitted from the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment Bill 2021. The clause is the most talked about that was removed.

As Sierra Leone observes International Children’s Day, the Deputy Commissioner at the National Children’s Commission (NCC) Fabundeh Ansumana has called on the government and other stakeholders to ensure that polices, structures and services are put in place to protect the country’s children.

Speaking to Politico on the 18th November 2022, Ansumana said this year’s theme is titled “Better tomorrow for the children”, which he said can only be achieved when better policy frameworks are established.

Climate Change affects 215 million Africans – Report

A report by Institute for Governance Reform (IGR) and Afro Barometer has indicated that between 2010 and 2022, climate change has affected 215.3 million Africans.

This makes the continent having the top ten most climate vulnerable countries in the world with just over 20% of the world population.

Sierra Leone First Lady presents her SGBV strides in Dubai

Sierra Leone’s First Lady, Fatima Bio, has present her track record in fighting Sexual and Gender Based Violence (SGBV) during a conference in Dubai.

This is according to the Information Attache of the Sierra Leone Embassy in United Arab Emirate. 

The summit was to highlight and discuss issues affecting women and girls in the African continent.

SLRA closes dangerous Dasse Bridge for repairs

The deteriorating state of the Dasse Bridge in the Moyamba District has led to its temporary closure by the Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA).

There is no news yet as to when it would be fixed but SLRA’s Communication Specialist, Kaifa Jaward on the 18th November 2022 told Politico that the institution has engaged Engineers to assess the bridge to know the level of damage, and was not certain when repair work will start. 

Fire Force advises on fire prevention

The Sierra Leone Fire Force has warned citizens to be careful with fire outbreak, citing likelihood of an increase in fire disasters in the country..

The National Fire Force Divisional Officer, Bintu Fatmata Kamara in a media engagement on the 18th November in Freetown warned that the fire outbreaks tend to spread easily during the dry season due to more wind gusts in the atmosphere. She also warned those living in disaster-prone areas to be cautious.

Salesman remanded for “stealing” from employer

Magistrate Mark Ngegba of Pademba Road Court No. 1 in Freetown has remanded Ibrahim Samura, a student and Sales Man, for allegedly stealing from his employer , Mohamed Muctarr Jalloh, the sum of OLe 113,420,000 (one hundred and thirteen million four hundred and twenty thousand Leones).

Samura, 29, is before the court for a count of Larceny by Servant contrary to section 17(1) (a) of the Larceny Act of 1916.
