Speaker criticizes Sierra Leone roads safety authority

Speaker of Parliament Dr. Chernor Abass Bundu has criticized the process sometimes applied by people connected to the acquisition of vehicle licenses at the Sierra Leone Roads and Safety Authority (SLRSA) at the Pademba Road Office.

 Bundu narrated to parliament on the 21st of February 2023 how what he was asked to pay and what was recorded in the receipt from personnel in the institution were at variance.

“If they could do that to Mr. Speaker, I wonder what ordinary Sierra Leoneans are going through”, he said.

MPs praise Sierra Leone new Peace Commission Chairman

Members of Parliament have heaped praises on the newly approved Chairman at the Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC) Rev Shodankeh Johnson, describing him as being fit for the position.

Speaking on the 21th February 2023, MP representing constituency 080 Rev. Ishmail Sama Sandy the nominee has immensely contributed to the country’s development.

 “As I speak, Rev Shodankeh Johnson has complemented the effort of government in the provision of more than eighty schools across this nation” said Sandy.

Christian Aid Chair calls for increased political participation

The Chairman of Christian Aid, John Seatamn, has during a visit called on Sierra Leonean to ensure their voices are heard through the ballot box in the upcoming elections.

Seatamn said at a press conference organised at the institution’s country office in Freetown, Tuesday 21st February 2023. 

The Chairman said the reason is that the larger the number of people who vote, the more likely they get a representative government.

Call for increased gender reporting during elections

In order to strengthen the political participation of women in Sierra Leone through media monitoring, a Gender Media Scorecard has been released which calls for increased gender-sensitive reporting during the upcoming June 24th, 2023 elections.

The Launch of a Policy Brief and 2023 Media Gender Scorecard on the coverage of women in politics took place on the 21st of February 2023 at the Atlantic Hotel in Freetown. 

Man charged with visa fraud

James Baimba, 31 of Four Mile, an area just outside Freetown has appeared before a magistrate in Freetown and charged with defrauding the sum of (one hundred and twenty-two thousand and seven hundred new Leone NLe 122, 700 from different people on the promise of facilitating their travel abroad.

The accused pleaded not guilty to all nine counts ranging from obtaining money by false pretences to altering and forging documents.

Sierra Leone president faces off with old challenger

The main opposition All People’s Congress Party has overwhelmingly elected Dr. Samura Mathew Wilson Kamara as the Party's Presidential Candidate ahead of the June 2023 elections.

Dr. Samura will be contesting again against incumbent President Julius Maada Bio.

He is yet to announce his running mate after he was elected during the party’s delegates' conference in Makeni yesterday. 

 

Sierra Leone opposition party leader jailed for having sex with a minor

Former Chairman and Leader of Alliance Democratic Party (ADP), Mohamed Kamarainba Mansaray has been handed a 32-year sentence after he was found guilty of sexually penetrating a 15-year-old Junior Secondary School (JSS) pupil on different occasions in Kono and Freetown. 

The judgment by High Court Judge Samuel Omodele Taylor in Freetown on Friday 17th February 2023 also saw co-accused Marion Arouni sentenced to 15 years imprisonment after being found guilty on two counts.
