Sierra Leone parliament chickens out on welfare bill amid condemnation

Parliamentarians after hours of tension, heightened emotions, and loud undertones denoting disappointment in the well of parliament, withdrew the bill entitled the Parliament Act of 2023.

The bill according to its drafters seeks to address the welfare of the legislative arm of government.

Following a division among the law makers on the bill, the Deputy Speaker of Parliament Segepoh Solomon Thomas moved a motion for a withdrawal on the 6th of April 2023.

City of Rest calls for help after fire guts mental home

The Programme Coordinator at City of Rest a drug Rehabilitation centre Augusta Johnny has called on the public to support the home with some basic amenities including food and drugs following a fire incident that left one patient at the facility dead.

$25million for Tikonkoh-Kpetemba road

Sierra Leone’s parliament has ratified a twenty-five dollar loan agreement for the Tikonkoh Kpetemba- Mattru Jong road project between the Government of Sierra Leone and the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA).

According to the Minister of Finance Sheku Fantamadi Bagura, the agreement which was ratified on the 4th of April 2023 seeks to contribute to the economic development of the local communities in the southern region and the country as a whole.

In an effort to intensify the war against fake news, the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists – SLAJ in partnership with the Independent Radio Network (IRN) and the BBC Media Action, with funding support from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and Partners on 5th April launched a platform for the publication of verified contents.  

Hundreds graduate at F.B.C today

Hundreds of students are to graduate today 12th April from Fourah Bay College (FBC), a constituent college of the University of Sierra Leone (USL). The convocation is to be held at the institution’s Amphitheatre at Mount Aureol.

The other constituent colleges of the university, IPAM, and COMAHS will be having theirs on the 13th and 14th of April, 2023 respectively at the same auditorium.

Alleged gun importer granted bail

Magistrate Mark Ngegba has granted bail to a man alleged to have imported a gun and some narcotic drugs from Philadelphia in the United State of America to Sierra Leone.

The conditions of the bail granted to Dennis Koroma are that he should provide two sureties with NLe 200,000 each with properties in Freetown and must be holders of the new National Identity Card.
