Sierra Leone’s main opposition vows to boycott governance

Sierra Leone’s main opposition Party, the All People’s Congress (APC) has in a press statement expressed the party’s position of not participating in Legislative and Local governance if fresh elections were not conducted within six months.

The statement dated 30th June 2023, came three days after President Julius Maada Bio had been announced as winner of the June 2023 presidential elections in Sierra Leone and sworn in.

Chiefs want statutory functions in Sierra Leone

Paramount Chiefs across the country want to be empowered with the statutory powers to maintain law and order in their various chiefdoms, according to the Chairman for the Council of Paramount Chiefs PC Fasuluku Sonsiama III.

Whilst speaking on behalf of his colleague paramount chiefs during their congratulatory visit to the newly re-elected President Julius Maada Bio on the 30th June 2023, the PC said that “the statutory functions to bring law and order in our respective chiefdoms had been taken away from us”.

Tribal heads congratulate President Bio on his reelection

Kono Chief Sahr Holando Gbekie congratulated President Julius Maada Bio on his re-election and commended his government for supporting tribal heads in the country.

 Gbekie expressed gratitude to the president that for the first time, the Council of Tribal Heads has an office in the Freetown Municipality, located at the Freetown City Council building.

PBO staff trained on money bill determination

Staffs of the Parliamentary Budget Office (PBO) of Sierra Leone’s parliament and other critical stakeholders have been trained to understand the intricate processes and procedures involved in money bill determination and cost so as to ensure the rolling out of the same in the legislative process.

The event which was supported by the Inter-Parliament Union (IPU) was hosted by PBO through a webinar held at the Parliament Building, Tower Hill in Freetown on the 29th of June 2023.

Postmortem indicates death at Govt. Wharf

A postmortem document produced by the Office of Births and Deaths says 18-year-old Mohamed Kamara of 10 Government Wharf in Freetown died from a gunshot wound to the head.

The cause of death certificate seen by Politico on Saturday 1st July 2023 further indicated that the death was as a result of “acute hemorrhagic shock” and that “it was as a result of multiple skull fractures with extrusion or brain substance.”

Sierra Leone religious leaders to embark on a reconciliation drive
