Call for SIerra Leone to address due justice issues

The National Peace Education Advisor at United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) Idriss Gibson Mansaray has called on the government to address what he described as ‘due justice’ issues for sustainable peace in the country.

 As Sierra Leone joined the global community to commemorate International Peace Day on the 21st of September 2023, Mansaray explained the importance of the commemoration of the day to the people of Sierra Leone with the global theme: “Action for Peace, Ambition for Global Goal.”  

Calls for Sierra Leone to encourage workers’ unionism

The Deputy Secretary General of the Regional Trade Union Akhator Joel Odigie wants the government to create an enabling environment for workers to form unions and be empowered.  

Odigie made this call on the 20th of September 2023 at a meeting with the Minister of Employment and Social Security Mohamed Rahman Swaray, whilst discussing the welfare and safety of workers and African workers’ efforts to contribute to halting Illicit Financial Flows (IFFs).

43 criminal cases sent to High Court

In order to conclude the official High Court Call Over in view of opening of the criminal calendar, 43 criminal cases have been brought before the court, marking the beginning of the September 2023 criminal session.

The judicial session was held at the main Law Courts Building in Freetown on the 19th of September 2023.

Chimpanzee held captive in eastern Sierra Leone

Efforts by the Staff of Tacugama Chimpanzee Sanctuary to take custody of a young Chimpanzee found being held in a cage as a pet by an unnamed individual in Koidu, Kono District has been thwarted by those holding the animal.

 According to the Communications Officer of the sanctuary, Sidikie Bayoh, the person holding the chimp had requested money in exchange for the primate.

Mother jailed 24 years for throwing baby in a pit latrine

Justice Adrian Fisher has sentenced Fatmata Kamara to 24 years, after being found guilty of Manslaughter by throwing her newborn baby in a pit toilet.

The mother was said to have been convicted weeks ago and her judgment was delivered on the 19th of September, 2023 at the main Law Courts Building, Freetown.

Freetown Mayor-elect defends her presence at UNGA
