By Prince J Musa in Kenema
The Minister of Works and Public Assets, Peter Bayuku Konteh, in collaboration with officials of the Road Maintenance Fund Administration (RMFA), has ended a regional tour to monitor feeder roads local councils are constructing in the east of the country.
Mr Conteh and delegation visited Kenema, Kailahun and Kono districts where they checked the progress of the roads under construction.
Whiles addressing stakeholders in Kenema, Conteh said the mission was meant to ensure that roads projects were implemented in accordance with agreements signed with contractors.
“We want to ensure that the cost of each road project is commensurate to the quality of work done, since road is one of the tangible aspects to bring development to the citizens.”
“One way to end poverty is to improve on road network in the country, which we are focused and determined to deliver to the people,” he added.
Whiles inspecting the roads, the minister warned local councils and contractors to invest in the projects by using the machines available instead of manual labor.
Chairman of the Kenema district council, Mohamed Amadu Sesay, used his address to express his frustration on the conditions of the city’s major roads.
“We have been deprived for quite too long of tarmac roads in Kenema and our people cry about the road. Only road and electricity will bring development to the city,” he said.
Kenema city has some of the most deplorable roads in the region, with more than half of the city’s roads in dust.
Contracts to fix the roads have taken years without completion.
“The people are concerned that the city road work is slow and want to ask government where Kenema city stands in terms of road networks?” Sesay added.
