NaYCom Head south, wants more help for trainees

By Newman Anthony Levey

The Regional Coordinator National Youth Commission South, Ibrahim S. Kabba has appealed for more support from interested parties so that more young people would be given life-changing skills training.

‘’ In December of 2022, we certified 270 youths in different skills, notably in operating heavy machines, masonry, nursing and other professions’’,Kabba explained to Kakua Express.

He said a good number of those certified have gained employment at the district and city councils as well as in the private sector.

He spoke of how in March this year, they trained 101 youths in digital learning, some of whom he said have got jobs.

He said the commission provides an intensive computer course that runs for nine months which he stated is intensive, adding that they also offer hardware courses.

The regional coordinator said when their computers have problems, they call on their past students who then do the necessary repairs. He also said they have started tailoring training and are hoping to open an auto mechanic department, all in a bid to make young people  self- reliant, and move away from begging.

‘’ IF we have a vehicle, we will open a driving school for those who are interested in driving. We are on several other activities to make things work for our youths. We are getting maximum cooperation from the youths who are coming to learn different skills for empowerment’’. Kabba said.

He stated that they are looking for partners to support them with startup kits for those undergoing tailoring training.

‘’ We are writing appeal letters for support. Government cannot do everything. We are looking for well- meaning citizens to come and help us. We are being supported by the ministry of youths affairs through the national youths commission. We have received support from the Bo District Council Chairman, Kosseh Hindowa with 10 computers and fuel. Recently, Mayor of Bo,Kobba Musa made an unannounced visit and gave us one laptop computer and fuel. The mayor was impressed with what is going on at our office’’, he boasted.

He explained those accepted into their programmes should be able to read and write. Those who have completed any of the three public exams but lack the opportunity to further their education can enroll.

He emphasized the need for stakeholders and the private sector to support youth focused projects, that may help them stay away from drugs and crime.

He said government has done a lot supporting NaYCom’s  activities, and believes the involvement of the private sector will further help accelerate more development initiatives for young people.
