The Acting Principal of the Milton Margai College of Education & Technology (MMCET) has called on the academic and administrative staff to be loyal and committed to the administration so that together they can undertake more development projects to uplift it to higher heights.
Dr Philip John Kanu was speaking at a staff retreat last week, where he said in anticipation of the approval of the college’s status as a technical university, the main focus of his administration now is to upgrade it to a point that it can offer technical courses beneficial to the country and in line with the government’s priorities. He noted that for this to happen, all hands must be on deck.
According to Dr. Kanu, when the college would have finally been upgraded to a technical university, their main focus for the future would be to position themselves to establishing centers to train lecturers and instructors to handle the middle-level manpower needs of the country, in addition to its existing focus on teaching, technical and tourism education.
The retreat held in the college’s Goderich campus was designed to discuss its performance in the last academic year and plan ahead for the new academic year. It notably discussed the college’s Strategic Plan for the next five years.
The administration also commissioned two new buses for staff of the three campuses of Goderich, Congo Cross and Brookfields, to ease their transportation constraints.
Dr Kanu, in his presentation, also highlighted challenges facing the college since he assumed the mantle of leadership. He recalled that when he took up office a year ago, he had to contend with the poor state of the facilities across the college’s campuses. He also cited a Le12 billion debt he inherited, which, with commitment and dedication to service, he was able to repay over Le5 billion.
In his keynote address, Dr. Victor Massaquoi, a representative from the Technical Team in the Ministry of Higher Education, said that for economic growth to be attained, tertiary and women’s education would be very pivotal. He also said that for education to thrive in Sierra Leone, there is a need for an overhaul of the current education system, something his ministry was working on.
