Representatives of the thirteen member states of the regional grouping ECOWAS responsible for regulating the activities of the Telecommunications/ ICT sector in their respective countries, have held a Virtual meeting aimed at coordinating activities and assessing their response to the Regulation on Roaming on Public Mobile Communications Networks in the ECOWAS Space. The regulation had earlier been adopted by the Council of Ministers in December 2017 with the aim to reduce the prices paid by ECOWAS citizens for use of communication services whilst roaming within the region.
The meeting was to review the progress made in the implementation of the Regulation by member states and to develop a strategy that would pave the way for speedy implementation.
Commissioner for Telecommunication and Information Technologies at the ECOWAS Commission Dr. Zouli Bonkoungou reminded members of expectations for a harmonized and affordable roaming regime in the ECOWAS Space and called on the leadership of Telecoms Director-Generals in the different countries to ensure an efficient operation of the Regulation for the benefit of their citizens.
Also the achievements of the free roaming in some countries were also recognized and for Director Generals to ensure the effective implementation of the regulation on roaming. A resolution was adopted to conclude the effective implementation of the regulation by 31st March 2021.
