Varsity reopens on Saturday

The Secretariat of
the University of Sierra Leone says its constituent colleges will
reopen on 1 December.

In a meeting held
on Tuesday by the “Vice Chancellor and Principal's Committee” at
the Institute of Public Administration and Management, it was agreed
that the constituent colleges should reopen to allow for the start of
admission work such as the issuing of acceptance letters and
orientation and registration of students.

The committee also
approved an agreement reached by the “Centralised Admission”
committee in a meeting held earlier on the same day that acceptance
letters be issued by the University Secretariat while the various
college administrations will handle the orientation programme. This
means that acceptance of offer fees will be paid to the University
Secretariat while fees for orientation will be paid to the respective
colleges.

The committee on
“Centralised Admission” headed by the University Registrar and
comprised of the Deputy Registrars and Senior Assistant Finance
Officers of the three constituent colleges agreed that all freshmen
should pay their fees in full before they would be allowed to
register, while continuing students should make 50 % payment to
qualify for registration. Further, it was agreed that all students
that applied for the Sierra Leone Government Grant-in-Aid should pay
their fees before they could be allowed to register.

According to
University Registrar, Sorie Dumbuya, these decisions were made
against the backdrop of the late re-opening of colleges which was due
to disruptions of the previous academic calendar by strike actions
undertaken by both academic staff and students.

At the end of the
last academic year, the University of Sierra Leone Registry announced
that it would start a centralized admission system in line with other
universities around the world.
