“Ritual murder” in southern Sierra Leone

By Newman Anthony Levey in Bo

The police in Bo say they are investigating a suspected incident of ritual killing which has left the small community of Gerahun Town, where the incident occurred, perplexed.

Gerahun Town is located in Baoma Chiedom.

The body of the victim was been found with parts of it mutilated in what police say appears to be a ritual style killing. The deceased has been identified by the Police as Moseray. A Police spokesman told Politico that the killing was not reported.

The discovery of the body on May 19 followed the disappearance of a 75-year old man, Sorie Kargbo, of the same town, since May 18. Mohamed Bobson Senu, regional Police spokesperson south, said that that suggested that the man was foreign in the community.

“Perhaps he wasn’t born here or doesn’t have a family here, because no one reported his disappearance or his death,” said Senu.

The youth leader in the town, Issa Turay, had reported the disappearance of Sorie Kargbo to the Police who launched a search in the village for the old man, only to discover Moseray’s body.

Officers from the Criminal Investigation Department in Bo are now handling the case involving the suspected murder. Senu said three arrests have been made and that two other suspects were on the run.

Gbessay Gobah, Rogie Charles and Momoh Sidikie are the three people in Police custody. The police say preliminary findings suggests that all three men had contact with Moseray on the night of his suspected “murder”.

“Gbesaay Gobah confessed that he was with Moseray at the night and they were dwelling in the same room when another suspect, Rogie Charles, came in and knocked at their door and requested that the missing man (Moseray) should go and assist him to process Palm fruit,” Senu told Politico.

He added: “Momoh Sidikie and Rogie Charles left together with the deceased for the said assignment. Few minutes later, Gbesaay Gobah followed them and met them in the bush closer to a groundnut farm owned by Rogie Charles. And the deceased was brutally killed and some parts of his body were removed, namely; the tongue, his palm and private organs.”

The suspects have denied the allegations of murder, according to the Police who say they intend to charge the matter to court soon.

This is not the first time the Police are investigating disappearance or killings in Baoma Chiefdom.

The Police spokesman said they still have open cases regarding the killing of one Morrison Kpaka, the disappearance of a boy and an Okada rider. Residents in the town have also expressed concern and have called for a speedy investigation and trial of the cases.

Meanwhile, the police are calling for the public’s support with vital information on the circumstances surrounding this gruesome killing of Moseray and the disappearance of Sorie Kargbo.
